The Ilizarov method - A modern orthopaedic procedure for your patients.
Rawal Med J Jan ;27(3):45-50.

Limb deformities and infections once considered untreatable, or treatable only by amputation, are now correctable with the use of a modern orthopaedic surgical technique, known as "The Rizarov Method". The major uses of this method will be discussed in this paper. Case 1: A 12 year old patient was seen in November 1999 with a fracture of the right femur. He had previously sustained a fracture through the same bone five months ago and this was treated in a plaster cast for three months, after which, it was declared fully united, although he had 4-5 cm of shortening and into,-nal rotation deformity of the foot. He was treated with the Ilizarov method and the deformity was corrected and the healing bone was distracted at a rate of 1 mm/day till his leg lengths were equal clinically and radiologically. The fixator was removed at three months. Case 2: A 35 year old woman presented with a three year history of non-union of the left Tibia. She had three unsuccessful attempts at inducing union previously. She was treated with the Ilizarov method, no bone graft was used and the fracture site was not opened at all. The fracture united in seven months.
