J Rawal Med Coll Jan ;19(1):64-6.

Background:To determine the frequency and assess the clinic-pathological presentation of mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC). Methods: In this cross-sectional study, all the cases of malignant salivary gland tumours were included. Out of these the frequency of mucoepidermoid carcinoma was noted. The data analysis included the age, gender, anatomical site of tumour and its histopathological grading. Results:A total of 68 malignant salivary gland tumors presented to the department of histopathology.Out of these, 44% were diagnosed as mucoepidermoid carcinomas. The age ranged from 17 years to 88 years(mean age 44 years).Male patients were 21 out of 30, with overall male to female ratio of 1:0.43. Majority (73.3%) occurred in parotid gland, 10% in sub mandibular glands and 16.6 % in minor salivary glands. Based on histopathological grading, 33.3% were high grade, 23.3% were intermediate grade and 43.3% were low grade MEC. Conclusion: Frequency of mucoepidermoid carcinoma was 44% among all salivary gland malignancies with more than half of the tumors originating in parotid gland. Histopathologically low grade type (43.3%) was the commonest.
