Oral Health Knowledge of Fathers accompanying their children to a University Dental Hospital.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the study was to determine fathers` oral health knowledge who accompanied their children to King Saud University, College of Dentistry (KSUCD) Pediatric dentistry clinics, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A convenient sample of fathers` accompanying their children to KSUCD, Pediatric dentistry clinics was selected for the study. The information about oral health knowledge was collected through a self-administered questionnaire. RESULTS: A total of 173 (86.5%) fathers responded out of the 200 distributed questionnaires. Sixty six percent of the fathers gathered the knowledge about oral health through the dentist while (31%) got the information from mass media (Television, radio, magazines/newspaper). Majority of the fathers (79.2%) answered that the main cause of dental caries is poor oral hygiene and (54.9%) reported because of increase in sugar consumption, whereas (17.3%) mentioned that the role of bacteria could be an added factor. Knowledge about the etiology and prevention of gum diseases was mixed. Majority of the fathers (89%) knew the role of fluoride in caries prevention. CONCLUSIONS: It is concluded that fathers had sufficient knowledge about oral health. But, still there is a need to enhance the awareness about oral health and disease process among fathers. Further work is needed to compare fathers and mothers knowledge about oral health.
