Impaction of Mandibular third molars.
J Pak Dent Assoc Jan ;11(2):77-80.

OBJECTIVE: A clinical study was performed to evaluate the different types of mandibular third molar impactions and their management. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Seventy five patients were evaluated clinically. Orthopantomogram was used as the only radiograph in treatment planning. A total of 48 males and 27 females were evaluated, with age ranging from 19-25 years. RESULT: Majority of the impactions i.e. 53.33% (n = 40) were mesioangular and 61% (n = 46) were completely unerupted. Depending upon the nature of impaction, anesthesia was selected and 63% patients (n = 47) were operated under local anesthesia. Elevators were used in 32% cases (n = 24) to accomplish the removal of the impacted wisdom tooth while 27% (n = 20) cases required some amount of bone guttering and were elevated from their sockets. Elevators, burs and forceps were used in 25% cases (n= 19). The recovery was uneventful and no postoperative complications like numbness of tongue or lip was noted. CONCLUSION: Most of the patients with mandibular third molar impactions were male. Mesioangular impactions were most prevalent. The cases, which did not require extensive bone cutting, were operated under local anaesthesia, while those cases requiring considerable bone cutting were operated under general anaesthesia.
