J Pak Dent Assoc Jan ;11(2):101-6.

A large number of world population suffers from diabetes mellitus (DM). Uncontrolled diabetes mellitus has many side effects on different systems in the human body. The unwanted effects also manifest in the oral cavity and especially on the periodontium. It has been seen that patients with uncontrolled diabetes mellitus exhibit advanced suppurative periodontal disease, while early tooth loss is an obvious feature among diabetic patients. DM has been discussed here in detail for general dental practitioners (GDP) to realize the gravity of the situation specially in South Asian countries with limited health care facilities. The early diagnosis and treatment of both diabetes and periodontal diseases have been recommended. It is hoped that GDPs will benefit from this update to improve the quality of health care that they provide to their patients especially in oral health. This will improve the quality of life of patients in both physical, psychological and social aspects of life.
