A Study of Sexual Dysfunction in Depressed Women.

Objective: To find out the prevalence and types of sexual dysfunction in women with depressive disorders. Design: A cross-sectional study. Place and Duration of Study: The study was conducted at the outpatient psychiatric services of PIMS, Islamabad (Pakistan), from September 2001 to February 2002. Patients and Methods: Arizona Sexual Dysfunction Scale was applied to randomly select 50 depressed females who were currently not taking any antidepressants (study group) and to another 50 selected females from general population who were not depressed (control group). Results: In the study group, 90% of the females had sexual dysfunction of which the arousal problem was the commonest (40%), while in the control group only 20 % had some sexual problems. Conclusion: Sexual dysfunction, especially in depressed females, is common in Pakistan. Decreased sexual desire leads to sexual dysfunction and is associated with mood disorder. Practitioners need to be aware to address this problem.
