Effect of conservative treatment on limited mouth opening in patients with temporomandibular pain dysfunction syndrome.

Objective: Th e objective of this study was to evaluate the effi cacy of conservative treatment on limited mouth opening in the patients of temporomandibular pain dysfunction syndrome. Design: Descriptive case series. Sett ing and duration: Th is study was carried out at de’Montmorency College of Dentistry, Lahore, Pakistan from October 2009 to April 2010. Methodology: 75 diagnosed patients of TMD were included in this the study. Mouth opening was measured at initial examination with the help of Boley’s gauge. Conservative treatment was then given to the patient and mouth opening again measured at 2, 6 weeks and 6 months aft er the treatment was started. Results: Th e effi cacy was measured by increase of 10mm or more of mouth opening aft er six months. Conservative treatment was found to be eff ective in 76% of the patients of temporomandibular pain dysfunction syndrome with limited mouth opening. Conclusion: It was concluded that conservative treatment should always be the fi rst line of treatment in temporomandibular pain dysfunction syndrome.
