Burden of orthopaedic trauma in tertiary care public sector hospital: challenges and solutions.

Aims & Objective: The study was conducted to find out the work load of Orthopaedic trauma in a tertiary care public sector hospital & to match with the facilities, if they are appropriate or deficient. Study Design: Prospective descriptive study. Setting: Orthopaedic Unit 1, Dow University of Health Sciences, Civil Hospital Karachi. Methods: It is a prospective descriptive study conducted on 3085 trauma victims which were seen and managed by the team of Orthopaedic Unit I from January 2009 to January 2010. All those patients who were referred as Orthopaedic trauma in Accident / Emergency & outpatient department were included in this study and their details were added in predesigned proforma. Results: Th e age distribution of study subjects were between 0.2 - 89 years. Males (73%) & females (27%). Maximum numbers of cases were road traffi c accidents (61.6%) followed by assault (16.6%), fall (13.4%), industrial/machine (5.3%) & others (3.3%). Out of 3085 Orthopaedic injuries, 1165 needed inpatient treatment while 1920 injuries were treated at the spot & did not require admission. In 1165 admitt ed patients 69 % had only limb injuries while 31% had associated head, pelvis/spine & thoraco-abdominal injuries.
