A study of 55 cases of ocular herpes simplex virus infection was carried out. The disease was more common in the fourth decade of life. There was a slight male preponderance with a male to female ratio of 1.2:1. The condition was unilateral in 85% of the cases and bilateral in 15%. Common colds and fever, were the most common triggering factors for the disease. The healing time was shorter when the corneal ulcer was treated with Acyclovir/Acyclovir and debridement than when treated with Idoxuridine/Idoxuridine and debridement. Healing time in stromal keratitis was shorter when the patients were treated with Acyclovir and topical steroids than when treated with Idoxuridine and topical corticosteroids.
