A study of Stroke in young.

"Stroke in Young" is though uncommon ailment but not insignificant. A total of fifty two (52) cases having this disease were studied who were admitted to Military hospital, Combined military hospital and Armed forces institute of cardiology / national institute of Cardiovascular diseases Rawalpindi from January, 1994 to March, 1995 (15 months), having ages between 18 and 45 years. These patients comprised of armed forces personnel, both serving and retired, their dependants and some of the civilians allied with armed forces Group 1 (age 18-25 years) comprised of 16 patients, mean age 20.75 years, male 06 and female 10. Group 2 (age 26-35 years) comprised of 22 patients, mean age of 30.81 years, male 16 and female 06. Group 3 (age 36-45 years) comprised of 14 patients, mean age 40.42 years, male 12 and female 02. Twelve (23%) patients were found suffering from hypertension. Twenty (38.46%) patients were smokers. Eight (15.38%) patients were having cardiac lesions (Ischaemic or congenital). Six female patients (33.33%) were found having disease in relation to pregnancy or puerperium. Five (9.61%) patients had hyperlipidaemia. Four (7.68%) patients were suffering from antiphospholipid syndrome. Three (5.76%) patients were found to be obese. Two (3.84%) patients had stroke while serving at height more than 15,000 feet above sea level. Two (3.84%) patients had migraine. One (1.92%) patients had typhoid fever and one (1.92%) patient was suffering from Sturge Weber Dimitri Syndrome. Out of 52 patients, 40 (76.92%) had ischaemic stroke, 06 (11.53%) had haemorrhagic infarction and 06 (11.53%) had subarachnoid haemorrhage. Forty two (80.76%) patients survived (upto two weeks from the time of incident) after stroke. This study signifies the importance of this disease. The incidence is though less but morbidity is high. Many of the risk factors are modifiable and preventable. It needs health education and health awareness.
