Pediatric Cataract: A One-year Study.

This is a prospective study In which 30 cases of paediatric cataract were managed over a period of one year between September 1996 and August 1997 at the Liaquat Medical College Eye Hospital, Unit-11, Hyderabad. Nineteen (63.3%) were males and 11 (36.7%) were females with ages between 15 months and 12 years, the average being 6.1 years. Fifteen (50%) cases were bilateral. Out of the remaining 15 unilateral cases, 12 (80%) were traumatic cataracts. Of the 12 traumatic cases, 10 were boys (83.33%) and 2. were girls (16.66%). Of the total of 30 cases, 26 (86.66%) were managed surgically and 4 (13.33%) were managed conservatively. Surgical procedures performed were needling and aspiration in 3 cases (11.53%), standard extracapsular cataract extraction (ECCE) In 20 (76.92%) and modified ECCE in 3 cases (11.53%). Various methods to correct aphakia were used: IOLS In 23 cases (88.46%), spectacles In 2 cases (7.69%) and contact lens In one case (3.84%). Postoperative complications noted during 6 months of follow-up were fibrinold inflammatory reaction In 10 cases (38.46%), posterior synechlae in 3 cases (11.53%), Iris sphincter erosions in 2 cases 17.69%1 and corneal abscess in one case 13.84%1. Visual outcome was found to be better in traumatic cataracts as compared to congenital and developmental cataracts.
