Pak J Ophthalmol Jan ;15(4):142-4.

We conducted a review of complications encountered in 373 consecutive cases of cataract extraction by phacoemulsification and posterior chamber lens Insertion by three surgeons. Type of Study: Retrospective and consecutive. Results: Posterior capsular rip and vitreous loss occurred In 1915.09%1 cases. Eleven were males and 8 were female. of these, 10 were 6/12 or better unaided at the last follow-up. All cases had insertion of posterior chamber 10L. There was no statistically significant difference in the unaided visual acuity between them and a selected series of 146 consecutive uncomplicated cases of phacoemulsification by the same surgeons. Among other .complications there was one case of needle Injury to the globe with poor outcome, and one case of successfully repaired retinal detachment. There were no cases of dropped crystalline lens, Irreversible corneal damage or cosmetically significant iris injury. Conclusions: Posterior capsular rip and vitreous loss, when properly managed, have a visual outcome comparable to the uncomplicated cases. The causes of poor visual outcome in phacoemulsification are no different from those In the conventional extracapsular surgery.
