Pak J Ophthalmol Jan ;17(1):15-22.

Purpose: To evaluate the usefulness of vitrectomy as a means of removal of intra ocular foreign bodies and treat their associated complications. Method: 25 patients with Intraocular Foreign Body (IOFB) demonstrable on the basis of X Ray or B Scan Ultrasound underwent vitrectomy for removal of the intraocular foreign body. Most of the patients had silicone oil fill, encirclement with 2.5 mm band, cryo around the site of impaction of IOFB and argon laser to the retina. Where possible the Silicone Oil was removed and an intra Ocular Lens Implant placed if a cataract was present. Results: It was possible to remove IOFB in 19 out of 25 patients. One patient had a double perforation. On the last follow up the Visual acuity was 6112 or better in eight patients and less than 6160 in six patients. Two patients developed a rhegmatogenous retinal detachment, one of which could not be repaired despite two further attempts. Conclusion: Vitrectomy is an effective means of removal of IOFB. Persistent Uveitis, the site of impaction, site of entry and entry site breaks can be significant impediments to visual recovery.
