External Dacryocystorhinostomy with Silicone Tube Intubation.

A prospective randomized study on external dacryocystorhinostomy with silicone tube intubation was conducted at the Department of Ophthalmology, Unit-11, Dow Medical College and Civil Hospital, Karachi. A total of sixty-two consecutive procedures were carried out between April 1997 and October 1999. Forty-eight patients were females and 14 were males. The study was conducted to determine the efficacy of this procedure to overcome the nasolacrimal duct blockage. These patients were followed-up for a mean period of 12 months. Of the 62 procedures, 54 (87.09%) were successful, being patent at the end of the follow-up period, while 8 (12.91%) patients continued to have symptoms. The details of the procedures are highlighted and the causes of failure in these 8 cases are analyzed.
