Efficacy of Dermatological Preparation of Bifonazole in the Management of Fungal Keratitis: A Brief Study Report.
Pak J Ophthalmol Jan ;16(4):144-7.

Timely diagnosis and effective treatment play a pivotal role in the successful management of fungal keratitis. Nonavailability of antifungal ophthalmic preparations in the country has posed a problem in achieving success. In this small study the locally available dermatological antifungal preparation, bifonazole, was used in the affected eyes as an alternative to standard ophthalmic preparations. Six cases of fungal keratitis diagnosed after positive smear and culture of corneal scrapings at the Combined Military Hospital, Multan Cantt, between February 1996 and March 1997 were selected for the study. The patients were treated with oral ketoconazole 200mg daily for two weeks and topical bifonazole 10.01mg%1 skin cream in the eye 4 hourly for 6-8 weeks. All patients showed clinical signs of improvement after one week. There was complete recovery within 6-8 weeks except for a residual corneal opacity.
