Serum Testosterone level in Acne Vulgaris.

70 young women between 16 to 25 years of age presenting with acne vulgaris were studied. Female on oral contraceptive, hormonal therapy, topical or systemic steroids were excluded. Acne was graded into mild and moderate to severe according to Leeds technique. Females in this study were divided into 3 groups: Group A - consist of 40 young women with moderate or severe acne leison. Group B - consists of 30 young women presenting with mild acne leision. Group C - Consists of 30 controls. Results: Serum testosterone estimation in group A has mean value of 1.74+/-1.10 which was higher than in control group whose value was 1.11 +/- 0.61 mIU/ml (p<0.0001). Group B showed a mean testosterone value of 1.51+/- 0.82 which is also highly significant with P <0.0001. Signficant correlation was noted between hirsutism and acne.
