CT & MRI of the Prostate.

The main indication of CT and MRI of the prostate is detection and staging of prostatic carcinoma. MRI is particularly useful as it has a higher sensitivity in detecting prostatic neoplasia, further with the help of endorectal coil imaging a much better resolution of the prostate and periprostatic regions is obtained. The main disadvantage of endorectal coil imaging is that each coil, costing at least 100 US$, has to be disposed after use. The other disadvantages are the limitation of field of view to mainly the prostate and periprostatic region, trauma to patient upon insertion of coil, and possibility of mucosal burns. Recently body phased array coils are available, providing excellent image quality comparable with endorectal coil imaging without the disadvantages of endorectal coil imaging.
