Treponema Palladium and Reproductive Losses in Women of Child Bearing Age.

Treponema palladium is usually attributed to disease known as syphilis, which has been well established entity in reproductive losses in women of child bearing age in developed as well as underdeveloped world. No work has been done in this part of world on it. This study is designed to find out relation between Treponema palladium and abortion in female of reproductive age in Karachi. Samples of 195 women with history of abortion and normal reproductive performance were collected from public and private hospitals. They were tested by two methodology (Rapid Plasma Reagin RPR test and Indirect Hemagglutination Assay IHA). The prevalence of syphilis in women with history of abortion was 3.9% and in women with normal reproductive performance 1.1% detected by both methodologies. Association of Treponema palladium in abortions has been noted in this study. Early diagnosis and proper treatment can decrease serious out come of syphilis.
