A comparison of clinico-haematological features in children and adults suffering from idiopathic thrombocytopaenic purpura.
J Pak Inst Med Sci Jan ;4(1,2):214-7.

Idiopathic Thrombocytopaenic Purpura (ITP) is a common cause of thrombocytopaenia encountered in clinical practice. In this paper, clinico-haematological findings of ITP in 25 patients below 15 years of age are compared with those in 25 adult patients (> 15 years). It was observed that in younger patients (< 15 years) the onset of symptoms was more abrupt, bleeding manifestations were relatively more severe and thrombocytopaenia was of a greater degree as compared to the adult patients. However, the pattern of bleeding sites was comparable in both age groups. In younger patients, the male/female ratio was 1.4:1, whereas in adults it was 1:3.75. In addition to typical changes in megakaryocytic series in the bone marrow a concomitant iron deficiency was observed invariably in younger patients and in 84% of adults. Furthermore, a mild to moderate megaloblastic change was evident in 68% of patients in both the age groups.
