Use of iodized salt in a rural community near Islamabad.
J Pak Inst Med Sci Jan ;7(1):391-4.

The main objectives of the study were to find out the level of awareness about IDD, among the target population and to ascertain the knowledge, attitude and practice of the target group about the use of iodized salt in a hilly village which would represent the area. Methods: A KAP survey was conducted in November 1995, on the use of iodized salt, in Shah Dara Village, situated about 25 km from Islamabad. 205 houses were covered in total. Results: 153 (60%) had heard about the iodised salt through various sources. 193 (94%) said that they were using packet salt contained in plastic bags, the others were using rock or some different salt. Oly 72 (35%) were using Iodized salt. Those who were using iodized salts were only vaguely aware of its benefits, about 1/3 thought that it was good for health and about half thought that it prevents disease. 94% had seen the goitre at one time on the other. Only 15% of the respondents knew the cause of goitre. Conclusion: Despite seemingly concerted efforts by the National IDD Programme, it seems that its impact on the endemic population surveyed is not satisfactory regarding the knowledge or use of iodized salt.
