Normal vaginal flora in pregnant women.

This study was conducted at the Combined Military Hospital Lahore to, find out the frequency of different organisms in normal vaginal,flora of`pregnant women. Two hundred pregnant women in the third trimester were selected randomly and high vaginal swabs (HVS were taken by a trained person. The swabs were cultured on blood agar and MacConkey agar under aerobic conditions. About 84% cultures were positive,fo r one or more organisms. The most common organisms were Staphylococcus (45%) and Lactobacilllus (23%). The other organisms isolated were Klebsiella pneumoniae, Escherichia coli and Acinatobacter aritratus.found in 9.5%, 8.5% and 5.5% respectively. Streptococcus agalactae was seen in 4.5% subjects only. Our study revealed that normal vaginal flora in pregnant women of our sample population tvas different from that reported in western countries and organisms like Klebsiella, Acinetobacter which are a major cause of neonatal sepsis in our setup were found in a significant number of subjects.
