Neurofibroma of the ileum without generalized Neurofibromatosis.

A 60 years old female presented with a painful lump in the right iliac fossa mimicking an appendicular mass. There were no signs of obstruction and per-rectal bleeding. Laparotomy revealed an inflammatory mass arising from the terminal ileum. Right hemicolectomy was performed and the specimen sent for histopathology. The biopsy report showed neurofibroma of the ileum.

Case Report: A 60 years old lady presented in the casualty department of Holy Family Hospital with the complaints of pain in the right lower abdomen, low-grade fever for three days and inability to pass urine for one day. The patient, inspite of repeated inquiry, insisted that she had these complains for three days only. In general examination her blood pressure was 150/90mmHg, pulse rate 94/min and temperature 100oF. Other features of general examination were normal. Her abdominal examination revealed a distended urinary bladder for which a Foley`s catheter was passed. Her abdominal examination after deflation of bladder revealed a lump in the right iliac fossa which was 3 cms. in diameter, tender, firm-to-hard in consistency with restricted mobility and ill-defined edges. There was a positive release sign at right iliac fossa. Gut sounds were audible. Rest of the examination was unremarkable. Laboratory investigations revealed a hemoglobin of 13.5gm%, total leukocytes count of 14300/mm3, random blood sugar was 110 mg/dl and urea, creatinine and electrolyte within normal limits. Ultrasound abdomen revealed localized inflammation of bowel in the right iliac fossa, the appendix being reported normal. Barium enema showed a filling defect in the proximal part of caecum. Rest of the colon and rectum were normal
