J Pak Assoc Derma Jan ;8(3):7-10.

Fungal agents such as Aspergillus and members of Zygomycetes and Candida species which were formerly considered lab. Contaminant and of little clinical significance are now known to cause disseminated and even fatal diseases in the immunosuppressed host. To see the prevalence of mycotic infections in our population 128 random sputum sample referred to us for bacteriological investigation were additionally cultured for mycotic agents on SDA medium. It was found that out of 128 samples 23 (17.96%) were fungus positive on SDA, while the fungus isolates on bacteriological medium were only 03 (2.34%). This dramatic rise from 2.34% to 17.96% clearly indicate that there are a significant number of mycological infections among our population. The isolates include Candida albicans 12 (9.37%), Aspergillus 03 (2.34%), Other yeasts 08 (6.25%).
