Tinea Pedis: A study of the clinical presentations in 151 patients.

A prospective study of clinical presentations in 151 patients suffering from tinea pedis was carried out over a ten months period, from April 1999 to February 2000, at the Department of Dermatology, PNS Shifa Hospital, Karachi. The clinical parameters that is, age of the patients, duration of disease, number of episodes, symptoms, signs and clinical patterns were recorded on a simple protocol Proforma. The delineated age range of the patients was 17 - 37 years, and the majority of patients, 50.9% (n=77) presented in the time frame of 1 - 6 months. The maximum number of patients, 58.2% (n=88) presented with the first episode of the disease, and were asymptomatic in 46.3% (n=70) of cases. Maceration was the sign most frequently encountered, in 68.2% (n=103) of patients. Interdigital was the pattern most commonly seen in 78.1% (n=118) of cases.
