J Pak Assoc Derma Jan ;11(3):2-5.

This prospective study was carried out at Department of Dermatology, Mayo Hospital, Lahore from October, 1992 to September, 1993, in order to assess the prevalence of pruritus in psoriatic patients. Two hundred psoriatic patients were interviewed in detail and thoroughly examined for this purpose. 81 % of patients (85 males and 77 females, age range 8-75 years) had itching of different severity. It was localized to the lesional skin only. It was present ab initio (86%) and was episodic in the majority (88%). It did not correlate with the age and sex of patients, duration of disease, or morphological type of the disease (p>0.05). Itching worsened with different environmental factors, dietary factors and emotional factors in a significant number of patients (p<0.05). Different anti-psoriatic therapies relieved itching (p<0.05). Itching is an important primary symptom in psoriasis.
