Fibrinolysis in Patients with Post-Operative Thrombosis.
J Rawal Med Coll Jan ;6(1):12-6.

Background: To evaluate the fibrinolytic response in postoperative thrombosis in patients presenting with venous thromboembolic disease. Methods: Eighteen patients with postoperative thrombosis were studied. Plasminogen levels, as a marker of fibrinolytic activity, were measured in all of them using an immunochrom kit. For test control, citrated blood samples were collected from 10 normal healthy adults of both sexes. Results: Of the 18 patients, 8(44.44%) showed decreased levels of plasminogen. Most of these patients had postoperative thrombosis in early postoperative period (six out of eight). Seven of the eight patients were aged less than 45 years. All four affected males were under 45. Conclusions: Impairment of fibrinolytic response (demonstrated by hypoplasminogenemia) seems to be an important factor for postoperative thrombosis. It is particularly important in younger patients, more so in males.
