Value of silver staining NOR`s in breast lesions.
Pak Armed Forces Med J Jan ;52(1):72-5.

The nucleolar organizer regions (NORs) are chromosomal segments in which ribosomal RNA is encoded. They are thought to regulate transcription of r-DNA and thereby, reflect nuclear and cellular activity. NORs can be located by staining with silver nitrate (AgN03) under prescribed conditions. In various studies, qualitative and quantitative differences of AgNOR staining have been found between benign and malignant lesions. We carried out a study on fifty breast lesions, both benign and malignant to evaluate their AgNOR counts in an attempt to assess their cellular activity. A significant difference was found in AgNOR counts of hyperplastic, benign and malignant breast lesions.
