Assessment of 13C Urea Breath Test`s usefulness in the diagnosis of Helicobacter Pylori Infection.

The aim of this study was to assess the usefulness of 13C Urea Breath Test for detection of Helicobactor pylori Infection. It was a prospective study conducted at Gastroenterology department of Liaquat National Hospital. A total of 43 patients were selected between May to June 1997 with the complaints of persistent dyspepsia for more than 6 months. Written consent was obtained from all patients. After fasting for at least 8 hours, all patients had upper G.I. endoscopy and two biopsy specimens were taken from the antral part of gastric mucosa and for rapid urease testing. The positive rapid urease test (CLO Test) was taken as control and breath samples of first 30 patients who had positive CLO test were sent for analysis. Out of 30 the 13C Urea Breath Test (UBT) was found positive for H. Pylori infection in 28 patients. The sensitivity of this test was 92.4% in this study. The urea breath test was found to be non-invasive, safe, easily performed and highly reliable method for detection of H. pylori infection.
