J Coll Physicians Surg Pak Jan ;9(2):85-7.

Consultation - Liaison Psychiatry is emerging as an important subspeciality of Psychiatry in general hospital settings. This paper describes an evaluation of all referrals to a Psychiatry Unit, in a 1200 bed general hospital, over a period of four months. One hundred and ten requests, for consultation were received during the study period. There was considerable variation between medical and surgical Departments, with regard to referral rates. The most common reason for referrals was management and behavioural problems. Depression was the most common psychiatric diagnosis. Two thirds of all these referrals, showed somatization. Management most often consisted of advice and recommendation of medication; followed by referral to out patient for ongoing psychiatric care. The implications of the study are discussed.
