Children presenting with seizures - A hospital based study.

To elaborate aetiological aspects and indications for justified investigations 100 cases of seizures in children were studied over a period of one year. Male to female ratio was 2.4 to 1. Maximum number of cases (77%) were noted in less than 5 years of age. Twenty four cases were found to have simple febrile seizures, 13 meningitis and 11 encephalitis. The other major group belonged to idiopathic epilepsy (21 cases). Eleven patients had history of birth asphyxia and its aftereffects. Eleven patients were with mental retardation and documented chromosomal abnormalities. Lumbar puncture was done in 32 cases and positive yield was in 24. CT Scan was done in 18 cases and 12 cases had positive findings.
