An Audit of Incompletely Excised Basal Cell Carcinoma.
Ann King Edward Med Uni Jan ;5(3,4):288-90.

A study was undertaken at George Eliot Hospital, Nuneaton to review histological records of 570 patients (646 biopsies) with Basal Cell (primary and recurrent) Carcinoma (BCC) surgically treated by plastic surgeons, dermatologists, general surgeons and general practitioners (GPs). The overall incidence of incomplete excision was 8.67% (n=56). It was 9.28% for plastic surgeons who performed the major share (58.36%) of surgery including the most complex cases, 3.64% for dermatologists (25.54% of share), 5.66% for general surgeons (8.20% of share) and 23.53% for GPs (7.89% of share). The maximum number of incomplete excisions (80.35%) were in the head and neck area. A high rate of incomplete excision was noted for GP operations. In 39.26% of incomplete excisions (22 specimens) the pathologists failed to mention the margins involved, potentially compromising subsequent surgical management. With the exception of GP figures results were comparable with previous reported series.
