J Coll Physicians Surg Pak Jan ;12(10):602-5.

Objective: To collect data of orthodontic treatment need and prevalence of malocclusion by using an Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN). Design: A cross-sectional study. Place and Duration: This study was carried out over a period of six months from July 2000 to December 2000 at Orthodontic Department de`Montmorency College of Dentistry / Punjab Dental Hospital, Lahore. Patients and Methods: The study was conducted on a sample of 300 patients irrespective of sex with age range of 12-17 years. The IOTN was applied to score the orthodontic treatment need that consists of a DHC (Dental Health Component) having five grades from `no treatment need` to `very great treatment need`, and AC (Aesthetic Component), a scale of ten color photographs showing different levels of attractiveness of the dentition. Results: 60 % of the patients were found to have definite orthodontic treatment need on dental malocclusion features, compared to 32.7 % of the sample in the treatment need group based on aesthetics of anterior dentition. Conclusion: The IOTN has potential in recording orthodontic treatment need and priority in a teaching hospital where a maximum number of patients are reporting for treatment.
