Systemic Manifestations of Erythroderma.
Ann King Edward Med Uni Jan ;5(3,4):300-2.

The widespread inflammatory and exfoliative eruption in erythroderma or exfoliative dermatitis produces secondary effects on other systems of the body, which can be quite debilitating. Our aim was to evaluate the systemic effects of erythroderma in our patients and to compare the findings with previous series. An observational and descriptive study was carried out on 110 cases of exfoliative dermatitis. The patients belonged to either sex and any age. A thorough history was taken and clinical examination with relevant laboratory investigations were performed. The mean age of the patients was 43.5 years with a male to female ratio of 2.9:1. The salient features included chilly sensations (63.6%), fever (39.09%), dyspnoea (33%), diarrheoa (16.4%), arthralgia (14.5%), oedema (40%), lymphadenopathy (56.4%), hepatomegaly (23.6%), anaemia (72.2%), leucocytosis (31.8%) and hypoalbuminaemia (22.7%). Erythroderma is not limited to the skin but effects various other parts of the body as well. Most of the systemic manifestations seen in our patients are comparable with the other studies. However, dyspnoea, diarrhoea and arthralgia have not been mentioned previously. Since various systems are affected in erythroderma, detailed examination and thorough investigations are mandatory in each case for an effective management of this disorder.
