J Coll Physicians Surg Pak Jan ;12(11):673-6.

Objective: To compare the results of banded and bonded rapid palatal expansion (RPE) appliances. Design: A comparative study. Place and Duration of Study: This study was conducted at Fatima Jinnah Dental College and Hospital, Karachi. The patients included in the study were treated between 1996 and 2002. Patients and Methods: Sixty-four patients with transverse maxillary deficiency and posterior cross bite were treated with RPE. Palatal expansion was achieved by bonded type appliance in 31 and banded type appliance in 33 patients. The results were compared by evaluating the lateral cephalograms and dental casts of the patients taken before and after treatment. Results: Most of the changes were less than 10 or 1 mm and were considered clinically insignificant. However, vertical change in the banded RPE group was greater than that of the bonded group. Conclusion: Both types of RPE appliances are equally good in achieving the desired palatal expansion but bonded type RPE appliance showed less vertical change during the treatment than the banded type appliance.
