Prevalence of Carcinoma in Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy.

This Study was conducted at Surgical Unit-II, Holy Family Hospital Rawalpindi over a period of 6 months (from, 1st January 2002 to 30th June 2002). Thirty five patients with bladder outflow obstruction who presented to surgical outpatient department were included in this study regardless of age. The history, clinical examination and baseline investigations were carried out. Ultrasonography (USG) of abdomen, prostatic specific antigen (PSA) estimation and transrectal ultrasound were done as diagnostic investigations. All patients underwent transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP). Prostatic chips were sent for histopathology. Patients who were confirmed to have carcinoma prostate were offered treatment according to the stage of the disease. Twenty three percent patients with bladder outflow obstruction had carcinoma prostate in our study.
