Association of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease with Chronic Sinusitis and Response to Treatment.
Pak J Gastroenterol Jan ;17(1):8-11.

This study was undertaken to determine whether an association exists between Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GORD) and Chronic Sinusitis. It was also done to gauge the improvement in chronic sinus symptoms by medical treatment of GORD. Twenty four patients were included in the study. Of these, 14 had chronic sinusitis not responding to the recommended treatment. They were labelled Group A. Ten patients with symptoms of GORD alone served as controls and were designated Group B. Patients of both groups received Cap. Omeprazole 20mg twice daily for a period of eight weeks. Retrosternal burning was present in 64% and regurgitation in 57% of Group A patients. Endoscopic evidence of GORD was found in 29% of them. Overall response to treatment after eight weeks was 57% in Group A and 80% in Group B. However complete eradication of sinusitis symptoms was not seen. It is concluded that an association exists between GORD and chronic sinusitis. Though a significant percentage of patients with chronic sinusitis experience some improvement in sinus symptoms with GORD treatment, it does not result in eradication of chronic sinusitis.
