The Role of Antifibrotics in the Treatment of Chronic Hepatitis.
Pak J Gastroenterol Jan ;17(1):33-6.

Chronic viral hepatitis leads to cirrhosis by means of the inevitable inflammation and subsequent fibrosis that follows viral replication in the liver. Fibrosis is the key event leading to liver cirrhosis, portal hypertension and, ultimately, life threatening complications such as massive GI haemorrhage, pancytopenia, spontaneous bacterial peritonitis, electrolyte imbalances, encephalopathy & bed-riddence. Anti-inflammatory and antifibrotic agents would thus logically allow a patient of hepatitis to avoid its complications. The few established treatments the medical world has to offer to patients of chronic hepatitis are costly and wrought with side effects. Some antifibrotic agents used in Alternative Medicine in the management of chronic hepatitis are given in this review article.
