Postgraduate Training in Pakistan: The Trainees Perspective.

Objective: To evaluate the expectations and ideas of postgraduate trainees in various disciplines in Pakistan. Design: Questionnaire. Setting: Postgraduate training units in hospitals in Lahore. Subject: Postgraduate trainees in various disciplines. Main outcome measures: Satisfaction or otherwise with training, optimal training. Results: Forty four postgraduate students completed the questionnaire. 97.72% were training for the FCPS examination offered by the College of Physicians & Surgeons of Pakistan and a similar number had chosen their own speciality. 70.54% were dissatisfied with their training with the majority (52.27% of total subjects) offering lack of structured training as the reason. The average number of trainees in a unit was 11.4 ± 7.14. The trainees` projection of ideal number in a unit was 9.7 ± 4.36. 75% considered the current training tenures to be optimum.
