Pak Paed J Jan ;26(4):155-65.

This study was planned to find the type and resistance of organisms in Chronic Suppurative Otitis Media (CSOM) in children of female hospital workers and to relate link with nosocomial infections. Due to the strict selection criteria adopted, 25 cases were collected over a period of 3 years in two teaching hospitals of Lahore. Median age of presentation was 6.5 years, males were 56%, 52% belonged to lower socioeconomic / education group. CSOM was unilateral in 19, bilateral in 6 cases, 64.67% tubotympanic, 32.25% atticoantral types, 68.42% had moderate hearing loss, 5 cases developed complications. 90.3% were positive cultures, out of 35 organisms isolated 34 were pathogens. Pseudomonas aeruginosa (37.1%) and Staphylococcus aureus (31.4%) were dominant with one case of methicillin resistant staph aureus (MRSA). Aspergillus species was isolated once as co-pathogen. 75% were monomicrobial cultures. Majority isolates were resistant to commonly used antibiotics, but sensitive to quinolones, amikacin, aztreonam, and imipenem . Elaborate epidemiological studies are required to define magnitude of the problem.
