Clinical and Biochemical features of Diabetic Children at initial presentation.

This study was conducted at Mayo Hospital Lahore over a period of four years to find out the clinical and biochemical characteristics of diabetic children at initial presentation. There were 112 patients included in study. Our male to female ratio varied with slight male preponderance in younger age group, to almost being equal after the age of 10 years. In 73 cases, duration of symptoms before admission was less than 4 weeks, 14 cases between 4-8 weeks and more than 8 in 13. Polyuria (61%), polydipsia (70%), nocturia (27%), recent weight Loss (33%), fatigue(48%), polyphagia (33%), abdominal pain (38%), vomiting (59%). Mean blood glucose was 433 mg/dl, 95 cases had ketones positive in urine. Mean PH 7.11, mean HC03 (9.1 mg/dl. Blood culture was positive in four cases. Two patients had pneumonia. The study showed that cases seem to present late with more severe derangement of acid base parameters.
