Pak Paed J Jan ;42(3):187-90.

Objective: To find association of serum zinc level with febrile seizures in children Methodology: This study was conducted in Department of Pediatrics, Mayo Hospital, Lahore from July to December 2015 as a case control after ethical committee approval. In this study non-probability, consecutive sampling technique was used. Informed consent was taken from all the patients. Blood sample obtained from each child and sent to the laboratory for assessing serum zinc level. Reports were assessed and if level of zinc was below normal, then zinc deficiency was labeled. All information was recorded on a predesigned proforma. All data was entered and analyzed on SPSS version 20. Qualitative data like gender and zinc deficiency was presented as frequency and percentage. Odds Ratio was calculated to measure the association between febrile seizures and zinc deficiency. OR>1 considered as significant. Results: In our study the zinc deficiency was observed in 60 (30%) patients. The odds ratio showed that there is 7.0 times more risk of disease in the case group as compared to the control group i.e. OR=7.0 [3.29-13.90]. Conclusion: There is significantly more risk of zinc deficiency in the case group as compared to the control group in children presenting with febrile seizures.
