Background: Diarrhea is defined as having at least three loose or liquid bowel movements each day. Acute watery diarrhea is one of the most common childhood diseases, especially in the first two years of life. Objective: This study was done to compare the clinical efficacy of Saccharomyces boulardii with yogurt in acute watery diarrhea in children from 6 month to 2 years of age. Material and methods: This randomized control trial was conducted at department of Pediatric Medicine, Unit-II, Mayo Hospital, Lahore The study was conducted in 6 months period. The non-probability purposive sampling technique was used. Data was collected in two groups, one was treated with Saccharomyces Boulardii and other with yogurt. Different variables were studied and the data was entered and analyzed in SPSS version 16. Results: The mean age of cases was 14.62±3.78 months. The male to female ratio was 1.48:1. Statistically no significant difference was found between the duration of hospital stay and need of unscheduled intravenous fluid in both study groups (p-value=0.616 & 0.417 respectively). Conclusion: Saccharomyces Boulardi i group showed better results in terms of reduced need for IV fluids as compared to yogurt group but this difference was statistically insignificant. It is thus concluded that yogurt and Saccharomyces Boulardii were equally effective in the treatment of acute diarrhea in pediatric patients from 6 month to 2 years of age; the duration of hospital stay was also comparable.
