Gilbert`s Syndrome: An experience in a medical ward.

Gilbert`s Syndrome is often over looked as a cause of fluctuating jaundice in patients with negative viral markers and normal liver parenchyma. This observational study describes 7 patients of Gilbert`s syndrome, diagnosed over a 2 year period, in a general medical ward. Gilbert`s syndrome was diagnosed by mild jaundice, normal liver enzymes, negative virological markers for A, B&C, no evidence of hemolysis, normal liver and spleen on abdominal u/s and increase in the conconjugated bilirubin levels on fasting. RESULTS: In a total of 1823 patients, 7 patients were diagnosed to have Gilbert`s Syndrome, giving it a prevalence of 0.38%.
