Evaluation of Plasmodium Lactate Dehydrogenase based Immunochromatographic Kit for the diagnosis of Malaria.
J Coll Physicians Surg Pak Jan ;13(3):176-7.

Although the examination of peripheral smear has remained the gold standard for the diagnosis of malaria since 1890, many newer diagnostic methods have recently been introduced. One of these, OptiMAL, detects plasmodium specific lactate dehydrogenase (p-LDH), produced by only live parasites, as target antigen in an immunochromatographic dip stick method in twenty minutes. The kit has been designed to detect antigenic differences between various isoenzymes produced by falciparum and non-falciparum species. We evaluated the performance of OptiMAL to assess its sensitivity, specificity and predictive values in detecting malaria in patients with presumptive clinical diagnosis of malaria. The study was not sponsored by the manufacturer. This is a short communication.
