Pak J Orthodont Ped and Comm Dentistry Jan ;1(1):57-62.

Fluoride has played a pivotal role in reducing dental caries over the past 50 years. These 50 years have seen extraordinary advances in oral health. Since the advent of optimal water fluoridation, other preventive fluoride agents have been introduced such as ingestible fluoride supplements and fluoride toothpastes. The adjustment of the fluoride level in community water supplies to optimal concentration is the most beneficial and inexpensive method of reducing the occurrence of dental caries. Whenever water fluoridation is not feasible, supplementation of a child`s diet with fluoride may be needed. The more extensive exposure to fluoride in the modern era has led to a continuing decline in caries experience and an increased prevalence of dental fluorosis in children. Several studies confirmed the safety and efficacy of fluoride in preventing dental caries. The use of fluoride in various forms thus remains the cornerstone of most caries prevention programme. The purpose of this paper is to highlight fluoride supplementation to help in defining the balance between maximizing the benefits of fluoride while minimizing its undesirable side effects and provide the dose schedule approved by the Council on Dental Therapeutics of the American Dental Association to practitioner.
