J Pak Dent Assoc Jan ;12(1):33-6.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the reasons for root canal treatment (RCT) undertaken in the students` and interns` clinics of King Saud University, College of Dentistry (KSUCD), Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. METHOD: Information about RCT was collected through a specially designed form. The forms were distributed to 5th year students and interns in male and female campuses of KSUCD. The participants were asked to record details of all root canal treatments planned during a period of two weeks in adult patients. RESULTS: The data were collected for 173 root canal treatments. Necrosed pulp (37.0%) was the most common reason for RCT followed by irreversible pulpitis (30.6%), failed RCT (18.5%), intentional RCT (6.4%), pathological pulp exposure (4.1%), trauma (1.7%), and root resorption (1.7%). Most (77.6%) of the failed root canal treatments were due to short root canal obturation. Over-obturation accounted for 15.7% of the failures. CONCLUSIONS: Necrosed pulp was the most common reason for initial root canal treatment while short obturation was the predominant reason for failed root canal treatment.
