Diagnosis of aural Tuberculosis among the patients of Otitis Media.

This study is performed to diagnose aural tuberculosis in patients of otitis media with ear discharge that are not responding to antibiotic therapy. It is an observational descriptive study done at the ENT department of Rawalpindi General Hospital Rawalpindi during 01-01-1999 to 3112-2000. All the patients of otitis media with ear discharge that were not responding to antibiotic therapy according to culture & sensitivity undergoing screening for acid fast bacilli are included in the study. During the period of two years, 923 patients of otitis media presented with complaint of ear discharge. All the patients were given antibiotics according to their culture & sensitivity report for 2 weeks. 74 patients did not respond to antibiotic therapy. All these 74 patients were investigated for aural tuberculosis. Among the 74 patients, 8 patients were diagnosed as a case of aural tuberculosis. Tuberculous otitis media should be suspected in cases of suppurative otitis media that do not respond to the antibiotic therapy according to the culture & sensitivity.
