Melasma: An overview and therapeutic update.

Melasma or mask of pregnancy is a common acquired cutaneous disorder of symmetric hypermelanosis characterized by irregular light to gray brown macules involving sun-exposed areas of the face. There is predilection for involvement of cheeks, forehead, upper lip, nose, and chin. Superficial and medium depth chemical peeling has become an effective procedure in management of melasma and efficacy of these procedures can further be enhanced priming the skin with some bleaching agent before peeling and adjuvant treatment with hydroquinone. This is a review article.
