Prophylactic antibiotics in clean surgical wounds.

OBJECTIVE: to asses the effect of preoperative prophylaxis with antibiotics for prevention of wou nd infection. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Three hundred clean surgical procedures were studied in this prospective study. Age group ranges from 4 to 72 years. Patients were divided randomly into to two groups. Group A received one gram of Cephradine and 80 mg of Gentamicin intravenously at the time of induction of anesthesia and at 8 hourly intervals while group-B did not receive any antibiotic. RESULTS: Postoperative wound infection was observed 2.85% in group-A and 6.87% in group B. In the majority of cases wound infection was noticed on 6th postoperative day. Pus culture reports reveled Staphylococcus aureus, E. coli and Pseudomonas. CONCLUSION: There is less incidence of post operative wound infection in patients who received prophylactic antibiotics.
