Pak Armed Forces Med J Jan ;49(2):82-5.

A prospective bacteriological study was conducted on 192 patients suffering from purulent ear discharge and diagnosed as chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM) at Combined Military Hospital Bahawalpur. Samples of pus discharge were taken from external auditory meatus and cultured on blood agar and MaConkey's agar. One hundred and forty three (74.4%) samples showed growth within 48 hours. Organisms commonly regarded as pathogens were Pseudomonas aeruginosa (55.9%), Staphylococcus aureus (32.2%) and various Gram negative coliform bacterial isolates. Cefoperazone, Ciprofloxacin, Meropenem, Ceftazidine, Methicillin, Amoxycillin, Clavulanic acid, Gentamicin and Doxycycline were found to be more effective antimicrobials showing higher sensitivity rate in vitro against Pseudomonas aeruginosia and Staphylococcus aureus respectively. Staphylococcus aureus was highly resistant to Ampicillin.
